Wine consumption in Spain once again exceeds, more than a year later, 10 million hectoliters

22-12-2021

After a 2020 complicated by the restrictions derived from the health crisis, wine consumption in Spain is showing a clear upward trend in 2021. According to the latest report on the evolution of consumption in our country from the Interprofessional Wine Organization of Spain (OIVE), wine consumption in Spain grew in the interannual period (12 months) to October 2021 by 6% to 10, 04 million hectoliters.

The quarterly report, prepared by the Spanish Observatory of the Wine Market (OeMv) for OIVE, indicates that since August 2020 the barrier of 10 million hl has not been exceeded. for a year-on-year period.

CLEAR SIGNS OF RECOVERY IN WINE CONSUMPTION

Consumption estimates for the month of September, from the "wine report" (INFOVI), already announced a rise in national consumption (+ 0.7%) that had not occurred since April 2020. In the following month, in October From 2021, the data in the report shows a consolidation of the upward trend (+ 6%), which has allowed to overcome the barrier of 10 million hectoliters.

Wine consumption in our country grew in October by + 39.5%, to 0.917 million hl. In this sense, it must be taken into account that it is compared with a negative October 2020 and low consumption (0.657 million hl). In any case, it is important to specify that the internal consumption data obtained in October of this year even exceeds that registered in October 2019 (0.904 million hl). This great growth obtained in this month is added to that of September, when wine consumption in Spain rose almost 85%.

By channels, and for the interannual period to August-September 2021 (NIELSEN IQ), the consumption of wine in the Spanish food channel is softening its growth, after the enormous impulse registered in the months of confinement; At the same time, the falls in hospitality, the channel that suffered the most from the restrictions derived from the pandemic, are becoming smaller and smaller. Wine with a Denomination of Origin clearly leads sales in both channels and also evolves better than the average in both Food and Hospitality. At a global level, all wines improve their trend compared to the last period analyzed (TAM Apr-May 2021), and even sales of sparkling wines are already growing slightly.

The consumption of wine in Spain, therefore, shows clear signs of recovery and already exceeds 10 million hl, a figure even lower than that registered before the pandemic (more than 11 million hl in the interannual to February 2020) but well above the consumption made in the TAM in February 2021, when it fell below 9 million hl.
