The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has published the first estimate of the main economic figures for the agricultural sector. According to these data, agricultural income has reached 29,093 million euros in 2020, which represents an increase of 4.3% compared to 2019, thus recovering its growth path.

This positive trend in agricultural income is associated with the good performance of production in the agricultural sector, which stood at EUR 52 991 million, up 2.6% on 2019.

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, pointed out that these figures reflect, in a context that has been so difficult due to the COVID-19 crisis, the good work of our farmers and stockbreeders.

PLANT PRODUCTION

Crop production has increased by 3.2% in value, reaching EUR 30,957 million, due to both increases in quantities produced (1.2%) and prices (2%).

Cereals had a significant positive impact, with a 29.5% increase due to a good harvest after a previous year (2018-2019) that was very much affected by drought.

Overall, fruit grew by 12.2%, driven by good prices, especially for citrus fruits. The positive contribution of industrial crops (+8.5%) and fodder crops (+8.1%) is also noteworthy.

On the other hand, there have been falls in potatoes, mainly due to a drop in prices; and in olive oil, due in this case mainly to a drop in production in the 2019-2020 olive campaign.

ANIMAL PRODUCTION

Animal production has increased by 1.8 % to ?20,272 million, the highest ever recorded. This record value is due to the increase in quantities produced (3 %), which compensates for the fall in prices (-1.1 %).

Pigmeat is the most important livestock production in Spain, with an increase in value of 3.2%, based on quantities, which grew by 6.7%. This increase is mainly due to the epidemiological situation of the pig population in China, which has significantly increased the demand for this type of meat.

The increase in pigs offsets the falls in the value of beef (-5.2%) and sheep and goat production (-1.8%).

INPUTS

Intermediate consumption rose slightly by 0.4% to ?23,694 million, with an increase in volume used of 2.5%, which offset the fall in prices (-2%). This increase is mainly due to animal feed (+3%), which accounts for more than half of the value of intermediate consumption and counteracts the good performance of energy and lubricants (-17.4%) and fertilisers (-5.1%).

On the other hand, total subsidies have increased this year by 2.3% compared to 2019.
