El Hierro: the island attracts the attention of winegrowers with a unique discovery.

The local Canarian farmers were speechless when the Regulatory Council of the DO Vinos de El Hierro, thanks to the studies and research carried out in the area, declared to have found 8 species of vineyards that had not been discovered before.

Specifically, 6 of them have a new genetic profile that joins the list of local Canarian species and the other 2 that may join later.

Thus, the island of Hierro has been declared the island with the most wine biodiversity in the Canary archipelago, as defined by Francesca Fort, PhD from the Department of Biochemistry and Biodiversity of the Rovira i Virgili University.

The names attributed to the first 6 species found, that is, Pinar negro, Seis de Carlos, Tesoro blanco, Uval negro, Uval piñero, Uvalero volcanic, turn out to be unique in theory and in practice, completely new knowledge and still by deepen. The impact has been so shocking that winegrowers have received the news in a great way, almost like Christopher Columbus when he arrived in unknown lands.

A second result of these studies, to which reference is made, and no less important, is that the local variety of the island (Verijadiego) has a genetic profile that is completely different from the Andalusian (Vijariego), therefore, it has nothing to do with Seeing with this and that of El Hierro would therefore be a unique variety.

In addition, the study has proposed three new names for the global database: Bremajuelo for the Canarian variety Bermejuela, Chicken shit for the American variety Isabella and Eusebia for the Andalusian variety Vijariego blanco.

The study also recalls that El Hierro must be preserved in all viticultural aspects, because it is very likely that there will be other species that we still do not know about and that will gradually come to light. Such a precious commodity should not be underestimated and ignored, but valued in all its facets.
